Course Description:
This course is designed to cover from statehood until present day. Throughout the course we are going to be looking at settlement patterns, water issues, land grants, NM involvement in WWII, NM Government, and NM Culture and Symbols. It is the goal of the course to help students make connections between the past, present, and future.
Teacher Information:
I would like to take this time to introduce myself to you as your son or daughters new teacher. My name is Regina Atencio and I am a graduate of NMSU-Las Cruces. I received my degree in Secondary Education Social Studies and my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. This semester we will be doing a variety of activities that include hands on projects, discussions, and individual work with the goal of not only learning the subject but also bettering our reading, writing, and thinking skills. Throughout the semester I will be sending home information so you can be aware of what is going on. I also just want you to know that you are always welcome to come in to the classroom if you want to observe or help out. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. This semester I will also be joined by local UNM student teacher Jacki Casady who will be teaching as well throughout the semester.
Course Objectives:
The Five Agreements
Classroom Policy:
Please refer to the FHS handbook regarding all school policy as they will be apart of the class. This includes dress code, food and drink, technology usage, absences, tardiness, lab top use and all other related topics. If you have questions or concerns regarding any of the policies please let me know.
Bathroom Passes- each student will be given 3 passes per nine weeks and it is required that is signed before they leave the room.
Classroom Supplies:
1 inch 3 ring binder
1 package of college ruled loose leaf paper
1 set of 3 ring binder divider tabs
Something to Write With (No Red or Green)
Standards Based Grading:
With a standards based grading system, students, parents and teachers will have more information about a student’s current knowledge through the learning process. Assignments will not be listed in the grade book; instead standards will take their place. As a student is assessed, the rubric score for that standard will be recorded. Students will be assessed multiple times on one learning standard (target). The student may initiate a reassessment of a standard, and I will initiate compulsory reassessments. A student is responsible for retaining knowledge throughout the course. The learning standard score in the grade book reflects the student’s most current understanding. Grades may regress, as no grades are permanent until the end of the semester, if a grade does regress this is a retention issue that needs to be addressed separately.
If a student desires to raise their score on a standard they must present evidence of practice or meet with me before school, during lunch, or after school. Only one reassessment will be allowed per student per day. In this manner they control their final score on a standard.
Practice Assignments
Work done during class and outside of class is important “practice”. The sooner you learn to do homework for learning, the better off you will be. The beginning of each class is our chance to review work completed. All practice must be maintained in your folder with the appropriate headings and including the date of your practice. This is a reference for both student and teacher and will serve as artifacts or evidence of your knowledge. There is no penalty for needing extra time I encourage you to re-do, revise, and refine. In order for students to be allowed to re-assess any learning target, they must have a minimum number of assignments completed. If they have not been doing all the available practice to better their understanding, I do not feel that they will be best prepared to re-attempt an assessment. As re-assessments are repeated more evidence would be necessary to show understanding.
Also there will be one assignment per unit that will need to be completed with a parent or guardian each unit. As parents you are your children’s best and first teacher and we are hoping that you can share some of your own knowledge with your children or that they might be able to share some knowledge with you. This will help you stay informed with the topics in the classroom and hopefully provide for some friendly discussion. Not to worry the assignments should not require more than 10-15 minutes, but can always go longer if so desired.
Mastery is a Must
ALL assignments with assessment scores below a 3 or a 75% are not complete and MUST be reworked. Scores below a 3 or a 75% indicate mastery of a standard has not been reached and a “second take” is needed. As long as students are motivated and take some ownership of their knowledge this is set up as a no-fail classroom.
As best practice students should:
I know this may seem a bit unclear and overwhelming but do not worry. We are here to help walk you through the process and answer any questions that may come up. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know!

Course Objectives:
- To gain a chronological understanding of major events influencing the area and the greater world.
- To identify cause and effect relationships.
- To critically examine issues and make individual conclusions that are expressed both verbally and written.
- To compare and contrast different cultures and appreciate the differences and similarities between groups.
The Five Agreements
- Be impeccable with your word- Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth.
- Don`t take anything personally- Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won`t be a needless victim.
- Don`t make assumptions- Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid sadness and drama. This one can totally transform your life!
- Always do your best- Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are tired as opposed to rested. Under any circumstance simply do your best and you will avoid regret!
- Be skeptical, but learn to listen- Don`t believe yourself or anybody else. Use the power of doubt to question everything you hear. Listen to the intent behind the message and you will understand the true meaning.
