Recently three of our FHS seniors received some big news! Jack Nguyen and Peyton Sandoval-Belt were accepted in to the highly competitive BA/MD program at the University of New Mexico; and Kevin Crane and Jack Nguyen won the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship.
The University of New Mexico’s BA/MD program is “ a specialized program at UNM where students are automatically admitted into both undergraduate and the Medical School "Students will first earn a baccalaureate degree through the College of Arts & Sciences (A&S) in a challenging four-year curriculum specifically designed to prepare them for medical school and ultimately to practice medicine in New Mexico. Upon successfully completing the undergraduate academic and eligibility requirements of the program, students will then transition to the UNM School of Medicine to complete their doctor of medicine (MD) degree”
Peyton found out about her admission in to the program in late March and was both relieved and thrilled. Peyton has already been accepted to play soccer at UNM and now will be adding this to her resume. She plans to study biology as an undergraduate and then wants to specialize in some type of surgery while in medical school.
Given that Jack Nguyen has won both the Daniels Scholarship (see below) and acceptance into the BA/MD program (which also covers tuition for the first four years) he is not certain what he will do. If he decides to take the Daniels Fund Scholarship he is very interested in studying medicine at UC San Diego. He wants to study biology as an undergrad and eventually attend medical school to become an orthopedic surgeon.
Jack Nguyen and Kevin Crane were also awarded scholarships to cover the next four years of their education through the lucrative Daniels Fund Scholarship. The Daniels Fund Scholarship “is an exciting and challenging program that provides the opportunity to obtain a four-year college education at any accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States, complete with financial and personal support throughout the journey… Every year, Daniels Scholars are selected from our four-state region of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.”
Kevin Crane was excited about the prospect of having the next four years of his college paid in full. He plans on attending the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland Oregon. While there, he wants to major in Fine Arts with an emphasis on printmaking. Without the burden of potential future college debt, Kevin is excited that he can focus on his dreams of building his own brand. When asked about life after college he says he wants to first get an apprenticeship with a tattoo artist while he build his brand. His brand “Blue Skies Always” will focus on t-shirts and custom prints. Eventually he hopes to also work in an art gallery in an area with a strong and vibrant art scene.
